CANADIAN OWNERSHIP & COMPLIANCE

Carrier Registration & the National Safety Code

Keep truck ownership and registration separate from the obligations of the person or company operating commercially.

What the NSC is

The National Safety Code is a Canadian framework of standards administered through jurisdictions; it is not one national truck licence issued by CCMTA.

Carrier authority

Safety fitness/certificate, operating registration and audit requirements are handled by the responsible province or territory and can depend on where the carrier is based and operates.

Operating obligations

Hours of service, trip inspection, maintenance, driver qualification and recordkeeping can apply separately from ownership and plate transfer.

Interprovincial operations

Apportioned registration, fuel tax and federal/provincial rules may become relevant. Obtain current jurisdiction-specific guidance before operation.

Verify before acting

Reviewed September 4, 2026. Rules, fees, forms, inspection criteria and permit processes can change and may depend on vehicle configuration, use, weight, route and carrier status. Confirm the current requirement with the responsible authority. This editorial guide is not legal, tax, mechanical, safety or compliance advice.
