How Much Does a Semi Truck Cost in Canada?

In a September 9, 2026 sample of six Canadian dealer listings, five used tractors were advertised at CAD $25,000–$225,600 and one new sleeper at $245,700. This is a small set of asking-price examples, not a Canadian market range or average. The actual purchase budget also needs taxes, fees, inspection, transport and initial service.

All six are Maxim Truck & Trailer listings displayed in CAD. Stock numbers connect each row to the direct source below. The as-is day cab, highway sleepers and heavier-spec HX are different purchases; a pooled average would hide those differences.

What the sample can and cannot answer

Purposive six-listing snapshot, accessed September 9, 2026 in the dealer’s CAD display. Include Canadian-located complete semi tractors with a visible numeric CAD ask, stock identity, stated condition and odometer. One dealer group (Maxim), one manufacturer, two cities; five used and one new. Exclude trailers, straight trucks, auction estimates, call-for-price results, duplicates, search-snippet-only prices and pages whose currency could not be confirmed. No random sampling, completed sales, quotations or national average. The low-priced as-is truck is not a ready-to-work benchmark. The new listing’s estimated availability date is not proof that it is ready for delivery. Prices are not commitments by SemiTrucks.ca, and these trucks are not claimed as our inventory. We have no completed-sale prices in this sample. Use the linked listings to request a current, itemized written quote; do not use their past asking prices as a valuation.

Compare the specification before comparing the sticker

Build a shortlist around the work: trailer, axle layout, required ratings, terrain, sleeper use and annual kilometres. Then compare the same generation, engine/emissions system, transmission and service history.

  • A higher odometer is not a complete condition diagnosis. Read engine hours, idle history, dated maintenance and major repair evidence together.
  • The sample’s 2018 X15 sleeper and 2022 A26 sleeper have the same ask; model year alone does not explain price. Equipment and condition need inspection.
  • Heavy axles, hydraulics, specialty equipment, sleepers and recent documented repairs can change the acquisition case. Verify whether each is needed and included.
  • For a new truck, ask about build specification, warranty terms, delivery date, freight/pre-delivery charges and the written price validity period. One advertised new truck cannot establish a factory-order average.

Purchase price versus acquisition cash

Use an itemized budget before deciding what to finance. The following amounts are illustrative allowances only, not dealer quotations or typical Canadian charges.

Taxes and financing change cash timing

No tax rate is assumed in the illustration, and the totals are not tax-inclusive. Confirm GST/HST, any applicable provincial treatment and registration charges for the actual transaction. CRA describes input tax credit eligibility as conditional on registration, commercial use and supporting records, among other requirements. A potential later recovery is different from cash due at purchase; do not deduct an assumed refund from money needed to close.

Turn the budget into a purchase decision

Keep the negotiated price and the lender’s financed amount separate. A down payment reduces the loan but does not reduce the truck’s price. Add cash acquisition items the lender does not finance, existing trade-in debt, near-term repairs and a reserve for downtime. Compare monthly repayment with your operating plan; a smaller payment over more months can carry more total interest.

A useful next quote request

Ask for the stock/VIN, CAD price, taxes and fees, included equipment, condition of sale, inspection access, warranty terms and delivery date in one written quotation. Compare several suitable trucks from more than one dealer before making a valuation decision. Refresh this evidence as listings change; the September snapshot should not be treated as a permanent price guide.
