Classic arrives
Freightliner records the FLD Classic before the later Classic XL. An early Classic should not be labelled XL merely because it has a sleeper.
01 / IDENTIFY THE TRUCK
Classic and Classic XL share a historical relationship but have different documented introductions. The 2007 specification profiles retain the 120/132 distinction.
The list covers the chronology currently represented here. Exact first/final model years and build applicability remain provisional; the last listed year is not a verified production endpoint.
The MY2008 literal Classic and Classic XL labels remain separate. MY2008, MY2010 and MY2011 are separately labelled equipment-qualified campaign identities; none establishes the Classic XL final model year, production endpoint or last build.

Freightliner records the FLD Classic before the later Classic XL. An early Classic should not be labelled XL merely because it has a sleeper.
The filing supplies a dated manufacturer identity checkpoint for the XL long-conventional architecture. It does not establish the Classic XL introduction, first model year, a first build, production continuity or its relationship to other long-conventional codes.
Freightliner Corporation’s March 16, 1993 Part 565 amendment adds “Long Conventional, XL” as model/cab code C and a corresponding new-sleeper-cab category as code U.
View dated specifications →The XL milestone introduces the 132-inch BBC designation. The March 2007 brochure remains the equipment source for the retained selectable profiles.
View dated specifications →The release does not disaggregate the 4,000-unit wording between Classic and Classic XL, identify model years or provide a production interval.
Freightliner named both Classic and Classic XL conventionals in its owner-operator programme context and separately reported that it built 4,000 “Classics” in 1995.
View dated specifications →This option is explicitly associated with FLD132 Classic XL. It must not be applied automatically to the shorter Classic.
The source announces order availability and planned mid-1997 deliveries.

| Complete campaign population | 9,689 vehicles across the complete 35-row response · not a family or model-year production count |
| Response roster boundary | Thirty-three literal rows are retained across Cascadia MY2007–MY2011 and Century, Columbia, Coronado and Classic XL MY2005–MY2011. Cascadia MY2005–MY2006 are withheld because the campaign labels predate the controlled 2007 launch chronology. |
| Shared manufacturing interval | November 1, 2004–June 15, 2010 across the complete campaign response · not allocated by family or model year |
| Evidence limit | Campaign applicability establishes neither universal steering fitment, a family production quantity, continuous availability, exact first/final model year, build endpoint, derivative equivalence nor successor relationship. |
Explicit model year · United States
NHTSA’s model-year acknowledgement controls the public family designation and expressly warns that the listed years do not match affected vehicles’ actual production years. The joined campaign record supplies campaign-wide defect, population, consequence and remedy fields only.
| Specification | Documented value / configuration |
|---|---|
| NHTSA make | Freightliner |
| NHTSA model / model years | CLASSIC XL / 2010 |
| Campaign | 19V-370 · insufficient air reservoir volume / FMVSS 121 |
| NHTSA data warning | Listed model years do not match the affected vehicles’ actual production years |
| Campaign equipment / defect scope | Certain 2004–2019 vehicles across the listed DTNA brands and models could have insufficient service-brake air-reservoir capacity and fail FMVSS 121 |
| Campaign-wide potentially affected | 741 vehicles across all listed makes and models · not a Classic XL-only production count |
| Manufacturer campaign / consequence | FL-815 · insufficient reservoir volume could reduce braking effectiveness and increase crash risk |
| Campaign remedy | Add air-reservoir capacity to affected vehicles without charge |
| Evidence join limit | Campaign/model designation only. The broad 2004–2019 campaign scope and listed model years are not family production chronology and do not establish continuous availability, first/final model year, order cut-off, last build or universal equipment. |
Explicit MY2010 campaign identity · United States
The vehicle-specific model-year query and official campaign record are joined by exact campaign number. Campaign-wide equipment, population, consequence and remedy fields remain distinct from family production chronology.
| Specification | Documented value / configuration |
|---|---|
| NHTSA make / model-year identity | Freightliner Classic XL · MY2010 |
| Campaign | 11V514000 · Daimler Trucks FL-614 |
| Campaign equipment / defect scope | Certain MY2005–MY2011 Cascadia, Columbia, Century, Coronado and Classic XL trucks manufactured November 1, 2004–June 15, 2010 with rack-and-pinion steering whose lower pinion bearing could corrode and fail |
| Campaign-wide potentially affected | 9,689 vehicles across campaign 11V514000 · not a model-specific production count |
| Manufacturer campaign | FL-614 |
| Campaign consequence | Bearing and spool-valve-seal damage could cause unexpected left or right steering input and increase crash risk |
| Campaign remedy | Inspect the lower bearing; replace the rack-and-pinion system if corroded, otherwise grease the bearing and replace/seal the bellows |
| Evidence join limit | The vehicle-specific queries control the five named MY2010 model identities. The campaign record controls the shared MY2005–MY2011 equipment, manufacturing-window, population, consequence and remedy fields. Those shared fields are not a production range for any one family and do not establish first/final model years, continuous availability, order cut-offs or endpoints. |

The exact NHTSA vehicle response is retained as bounded model-year and campaign-membership provenance. Its result count and campaign identifiers are not a production chronology, complete option matrix or relationship record.

| Label boundary | The literal Classic XL label is retained; it is not converted into Classic, Classic 120, a cab/sleeper configuration or a production endpoint. |
| Evidence limit | The exact NHTSA response establishes only the returned Freightliner Classic XL label, requested model-year identity, result count and campaign identifiers. It establishes no production count, continuous range, exact first/final model year, first/last build, derivative equivalence or universal equipment. |
Exact NHTSA Classic XL MY2011 row within the campaign response · United States · NHTSA exact campaign record

Specific MY2005–MY2011 Classic XL vehicles manufactured November 1, 2004–June 15, 2010 with ThyssenKrupp rack-and-pinion steering. The filing does not apply to the separate Classic label or establish a Classic / Classic XL boundary. · United States · regulator-filed manufacturer report
DTNA expressly included Classic XL in its Part 573 filing and documented the investigation sequence that preceded its October 7, 2011 defect determination. The combined dates and estimated 9,906-vehicle population are not allocated to individual families.

Reviewed September 14, 2026. Manufacturer figures remain tied to their stated reference; converted equivalents are rounded; original source units are retained. Application and inspection notes are editorial guidance.
Verified: primary evidence for the stated claim. Corroborated: independent supporting sources. Provisional: useful evidence needing confirmation. Unresolved: conflicting or insufficient evidence. A verified service document or announcement does not verify a production range.
Reference-specific values retain their edition. Build-specific values require a VIN or order record; transport dimensions may require physical measurement. Research intervals locate references, not continuous model-year availability. Reviewed 2026-09-30.
